Management of osteogenesis imperfecta
in adults
Topics to be covered
Management of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) in adults involves more
than efforts to increase skeletal mass. Patients suffer from a variety
of age-related OI problems including cardiopulmonary compromise
when there is significant thoracic deformity, hearing loss, accelerated
osteoporosis and fractures for affected women after menopause, arthritis
with joint hypermobility, and perhaps kidney stones or dentinogenesis
imperfecta-related tooth disease.
Educational goals
After attending this Meet the Professor session, participants
will be expected to:
- recognise the complications of OI in adults and their considerable
range of severity;
- be familiar with trials of pharmacologic agents to increase
skeletal mass;
- understand the need to prevent complications such as proper
body mechanics to avoid spinal fractures;
- be aware of patient resources to learn about management of
OI in adults.
Target audience
Attendees who might benefit are internists, geneticists, endocrinologists,
rheumatologists, and physical medicine physicians who encounter
adults with OI. Adult OI patients will likely provide important
personal insights.
Teaching methods
Attendee experiences with adult OI patients will be solicited for
group discussion to maximize management insight.
