Diseases of the parathyroid glands
Topics to be covered
During this session, the causes, diagnosis and treatment of both
hypercalcemic and hypocalcemic disorders associated with the parathyroid
glands will be covered. Thus the most recent guidelines associated
with the management of asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism
will be discussed including both genetic and sporadic causes of
hyperparathyroidism. A discussion of the differential diagnosis
and management of hypocaclemic disorders of the parathyroid glands
will then follow, where the topics of hypoparathyroidism and secondary
hyperparathyroidism will be reviewed.
Educational goals
After attending this Meet the Professor session, participants
will be expected to:
- be aware of the current guidelines for diagnosis and management
of asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism;
- understand the causes and management of hypoparathyroidism;
- understand the causes and management of secondary hyperparathyroidism.
Target audience
Practicing physicians and clinical trainees involved in the management
of patients with parathyroid disease.
Teaching methods
The audience will be invited to express their knowledge on the
topics to be addressed and this will be followed by an interactive
dialogue on the information that is raised.
