Jane Cauley (Pittsburgh, USA)
Cardiovascular disease, breast cancer
and osteoporosis: are they causally linked?
Topics to be covered
- Epidemiology of osteoporosis, breast cancer and CVD: focus
on age, race/ethnicity.
- Review of the epidemiologic and biologic evidence linking bone
density to osteoporosis (fracture), breast cancer and CVD.
- Potential mechanisms for the links between osteoporosis (bone
mineral density(BMD)), CVD and breast cancer:
o Shared risk factors
o Inflammatory markers and cytokines
o Endogenous sex hormones
o Lipid metabolism and oxidized lipids
o Vitamin K
o Vitamin D
o Homocysteine
o Genetic factors
- Are these associations causal?
- Can we extend BMD screening to identify women at risk of CVD
and breast cancer?
Educational goals
After attending this Meet the Professor session, participants
will be expected to:
- have an improved understanding of the biological and epidemiologic
evidence linking three common diseases of older ages: CVD, breast
cancer and osteoporosis;
- have explored whether these associations are biologically plausible;
- understand the utilityof BMD measures in identifying subjects
at risk for CVD, breast cancer and osteoporosis.
Target audience
- Attendees with broad interests NOT only in skeletal health
but in other common conditions of old age.
- Basic scientists who could help inform the audience about these
potential mechanisms linking the three diseases.
- Any others interested in the topic.
Teaching methods
- Handouts
- Potential ways to involve the audience
o Poll audience for opinion/votes
o Ask audience their expertise perhaps in explaining the basic
science behind each potential mechanism.
o Have attendees introduce themselves, their expertise and why
they are attending this session, i.e., what they hope to get out
of this session.
