Adding value to highly competitive research applications with a focus on the ERC funding agency

Topics to be covered

The ERC has launched two funding schemes the Starting Grant and the Advanced Grant. Both grant schemes are directed to individual grants with a bottom-up approach in all kind of fields and the sole criterion for selection is scientific excellence. It provides you with an additional opportunity to boost your Calcified Tissues research. But as you know things are not as easy as they sound. This interactive workshop on funding agencies will focus on the new ERC Starting Grants and will provide insight into the assessment procedures. Participants will learn how to write a strong proposal. The workshop is based on ERC funding but also will help participants to understand better their own national funding body assessment systems. This workshop will result in added value for your future applications for research funding, National as well as international (EU). In this workshop we will discuss the aspects of successful research proposals, as well as address the underlying characteristics of the assessment procedure, including panel and keyword selection, qualitative elements, layman and experts, characteristics of rejected proposals, aspects where advice may well be needed, and lastly the relation between advice and likelihood of success.

Educational goals

After attending this Meet the Professor session, participants will be expected to understand:

  • the assessment procedures and criteria;
  • the role of peer reviewers and panel members;
  • how to become “distinctive”;
  • that there is more than just being an excellent scientist.

Target audience

Scientists who are eager to attract research funds to realize their novel scientific research ideas, to work independent, to start a new research line and to establish their own research group.
