Many thanks are extended to all speakers and students who attended the recent ECTS PhD training course which was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 1-4 September 2011. Speaker slides will soon be available through the Educational Resource Centre. The course was another resounding success for the ECTS and we would like to thank all the local helpers for ensuring that all ran smoothly. A brief synopsis of the course, written by the local organizers, is given below:
More than 50 PhD students from 18 different countries all over the world who share a common interest in bone field research have gathered in Slovenian capital Ljubljana for the ECTS PhD Training course 2011.
The course was designed in the way that everybody had the chance to participate. Variety of lectures from basics of bone biology like bone cells, bone diseases and their treatment, bone markers etc. to specialized themes like bone innervation, vascular calcification, connection of bone and diseases such as inflammatory bowel and thyroid disease have taken place. Speakers were world known scientists working in the bone field as clinicians or non-clinicians and succeeded very well in making the lectures as appealing as possible. PhD students were invited to present their future (first year) or their already accomplished work as an oral presentation, while those in the middle of their research were having poster presentations. The main point was to get feedback and also directions and suggestions for the work following from scientists with a lot of experience in this field and colleagues who may be facing similar problems in their work.
Apart from four intensive and fulfilled working days, there were also unofficial evening activities. On the first day we enjoyed a quick guided tour of Ljubljana’s history on a boat trip, the next day a sightseeing walk after dinner and the last and probably the most amusing evening took place at the hotel terrace, where different groups of PhD students participated in “Sell your science” project and many excellent ideas such as “Glambone” and “EmoChip” were presented.
Participants had the opportunity to meet new colleagues and world-recognized speakers and discuss with them problems and interesting topics in both, formal and informal ways.
The local participants thank Prof. Miep Helfrich and ECTS organization for choosing Ljubljana for the ECTS PhD Training course 2011. We are very grateful to have participated as official ECTS helpers in this event.
