Meet the Professor Sessions

Mesenchymal (skeletal) stem cells: from basic biology to clinical application

Topics to be covered

  • An update regarding current and future use of mesenchymal (skeletal) stem cells (MSC) in treating degenerative and age-related diseases
  • Topics of basic biology of MSC to be discussed are:
    - novel makers for MSC and MSC subpopulations
    - mechanisms of control of proliferation and differentiation of MSC
    - safety issues required for clinical use of MSC
  • Current status of clinical trials employing MSC in a number of disease conditions
  • The possible mechanisms underlying therapeutic benefits

Educational goals

After attending this Meet the Professor session, participants will be expected to:

  • understand and appreciate basic biology of MSC with respect to mechanisms of proliferation and differentiation
  • be aware of novel markers that define the MSC and MSC subpopulations
  • be aware of the safety requirement for clinical use of MSC in the clinical applications
  • be aware of disease conditions where MSC are being utilized

Target audience

  • Basic biologists and clinicians interested in cell therapy, stem cell-based therapy or clinical use of MSC in therapy

Teaching methods

  • Interactive sessions based on questions prepared by the attendees
  • PowerPoint slides will be only be employed to present key facts or to enhance discussion
