Differential diagnosis and management of hypercalcaemia

Topics to be covered

  • Presentation and diagnosis of patients with hypercalcaemia
  • Algorithm for management of hypercalcaemia
  • Conservative or surgical treatment of hyperparathyroidism
  • Pathogenesis and treatment of cancer associated hypercalcaemia
  • Review of available therapeutic options including bisphosphonates and calcimimetics

Educational goals

After attending this Meet the Professor session, participants will be expected to:

  • understand the pathophysiology of hypercalcaemia and its correction
  • be able to develop a logical approach to management
  • be confident to treat hyperparathyroidism
  • understand the pathogenesis of cancer associated hypercalcaemia

Target audience

  • Clinicians who manage patients with unselected hypercalcaemia
  • Clinical chemists or radiologists who are involved in investigation of hypercalcaemia

Teaching methods

  • Brief overview of hypercalcaemia (slide presentation)
  • Presentation of illustrative cases for participants to resolve management problems
