BRS Diamond Jubilee

This year is the 60th anniversary of the founding of The Bone and Tooth Society, the oldest scientific society, worldwide, dedicated to clinical and basic research into mineralised tissues.

A small group of scientists and clinicians used to meet occasionally at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Great Portland Street, London, to discuss a common interest in bones and teeth.  On March 24th 1950, over a glass of sherry the idea of a Bone and Tooth Society was born and the first meeting of the Society was held on 6 June 1950. Even then there were question marks over the quirky name of the Society, something that has been fervently discussed by the members until, at the nth attempt, the name was changed to The Bone Research Society in 2005.

In this Diamond Jubilee year it is fitting that the Society’s meeting is being held in conjunction with the European Calcified Tissue Society. The first meeting of the ECTS was the 1st European Bone and Tooth Symposium which was organized by the Bone and Tooth Society in Oxford in 1963.  The Bone Research Society has awarded over 20 Diamond Jubilee Bursaries for young investigators to attend the ECTS meeting, Glasgow.
