Osteogenesis imperfecta

Topics to be covered

The session deals with the various forms of osteogenesis imperfecta, in particular the newly described types. The importance of specialized diagnostic procedures such as genetic testing and bone biopsy is discussed. Regarding therapy, the multidisciplinary approach to treating such patients is outlined. A special emphasis is on the use of bisphosphonates in the treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta: Whom to treat? Which drug? For how long?

Educational goals

  1. Understand the genetic and clinical heterogeneity of osteogenesis imperfecta.
  2. Learn about the key features of the ‘new’ forms of osteogenesis imperfecta.
  3. To appreciate the role of bisphosphonates in the treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta.

Target audience
The session is mainly of interest for physicians dealing with genetic bone disorders or who see young patients suffering from bone fragility.

Teaching methods
Each topic will be introduced by a brief overview, followed by questions and answers.
