Topics to be covered
Although the discussion can be broad ranging, topics to be covered
include
- the use of BMD measurements in men, and the controversy surrounding
the most appropriate diagnostic criteria. What other measures (e.g.
assessments of bone structure) might be useful?
- the role of sex steroids in skeletal health in men, the mechanisms
by which sex steroid deficiency may contribute to fracture risk, and
the use of testosterone therapy in men
- the approach to diagnostic testing in men suspected of having a metabolic
bone disorder
- the appropriate use of pharmacological agents to prevent and treat
osteoporosis in men
Educational goals
- appreciate the possible approaches to using BMD measures in men understand
the various aspects of the use of sex steroid diagnostic measures and
sex steroid therapies in men
- be able to choose appropriate therapeutic modalities for the treatment
of osteoporosis in men

Investigators and clinicians interested in the controversies surrounding
the issue of osteoporosis in men, and the most up to date, practical approaches
to the problem
Teaching approach
The teaching approach will be based primarily on brief descriptions of
interesting or controversial issues, with subsequent involvement of the
audience in exploring various aspects. The Professor will lead the session
and clearly summarize his views/recommendations, but will invite comment
and welcome input/discussion.
