Cell-based therapies: from bench to bedside

Outline of topics

Cell based therapies involves a new field of medical treatments, quite distinct from the established drug treatments and devices. In this session we will discuss the critical steps involved in the development of a cell or combination products, from bench to bedside, including the characterisation of the product with potency and purity assessments, and the strengths and limitations of preclinical models. Furthermore, the challenges for the development of those products and the industrial production processes will be highlighted. Finally, since many of these treatments involve applications in regenerative medicine, trial design and outcomes for musculoskeletal diseases/disorders will be discussed in this context.

Educational goals

  • Understand the complexity of cell based therapies
  • Provide a number of guidelines for the development of these therapies
  • Recognize the need for the upscaling and development of industrial production processes
  • Understand the principle of developmental engineering

Who should attend

Since this subject covers “from bench to bedside”, a broad audience of basic and translational scientists as well as clinicians may be interested.

Teaching methods

Interactive discussion with specific examples of product development in the field of joint resurfacing and bone repair.
