Meet the Professor
Laura Calvi (Rochester, USA)
Bone marrow stem cell interactions
Topics to be covered
- Role of microenvironment in hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) regulation.
- Osteoblastic vs endothelial stem cell niches
- Current research tools to characterize microenvironmental/HSC interactions.
- Potential roles of niche components in metastatic bone disease and
control of hematologic malignancies.
Educational goals
After attending this Meet the Professor session, participants
will be expected to:
- To describe the concept of the niche in the context of stem regulation
- To define experimental strategies to study the niche
- To list the current data supporting the role of osteoblasts as regulatory
cells for HSC
- To see the strength and weaknesses of niche regulation as a potential
therapeutic target for HSC expansion and for the treatment of hematologic
malignancies and tumors metastatic to bone.
Target audience
MDs, PhDs and MD PhDs with interest in basic and translation
research in stem cell biology in the context of the bone marrow microenvironment.
Teaching methods
Informal and interactive. Handouts will be provided.
