What is the purpose of the ECTS Exchange Scholarships?
The primary aim is to enable researchers to spend time in another laboratory to learn a technique not used in the home laboratory. Grants are also available for medical doctors to attend clinical trails.
Can I visit any laboratory of my choice?
The Head of the receiving laboratory must be an ECTS member unless specific reasons justify a visit to a laboratory of a non-member. Applicants may visit a non-European laboratory providing there is no European equivalent. There will be no extra funding for visiting non-European countries.
What is the maximum duration supported?
ECTS Exchange Scholarship Grants support visits of up to 3 months.
How much can I apply for?
The amount will be calculated according to the budget available, the number of applicants and the total amount of expenses claimed.
What is covered by the Grant?
The Grant is intended as a contribution to travel and subsistence expenses for the duration of the visit. It does not include cover for any spouses or dependents.
What are the criteria for eligibility?
All applicants must be a member of ECTS
There is no age limit
All applicants must demonstrate that they will apply the knowledge gained during their visit
How are ECTS Exchange Scholarship Grants selected?
Two members of the ECTS Grants Committee - one clinical, one non-clinical - are responsible for overseeing the review process. Each application is first checked for eligibility and then sent to three independent reviewers. These reviewers are selected for their expertise in the appropriate area. The review process is normally expected to take no longer than 3 months.
Reviewers are asked for their opinion on the following aspects:
Quality and originality of the proposal
Suitability of the chosen receiving laboratory
Quality of the candidate
Perceived benefit to the home laboratory
The feasibility of achieving the goal of the visit and benefit for the project

Final report
Successful candidates will be required to submit a report to ECTS within 3 months of their visit. The report should include the following:

1. Introduction/background - why you visited that particular lab
2. The results obtained and skills learned
3. Discussion on results and how new skills/knowledge will be incorporated into your own research
